Ukraine Countdown Day 8: Churches

This Countdown series was written and created with Instagram in mind. It has been republished here with little to no alteration.

As a card-carrying Atheist, you might be surprised to see churches appearing on my top ten list for Ukraine. While I have absolutely no time for the church – any church – as an institution, only an idiot would deny the sheer aesthetic appeal of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Not unlike the tanks, get close to the centre of any Ukrainian city of reasonable size and you’re bound to stumble upon at least one unreservedly decadent church.
